Fit & Scope

Clarity matters.

Decide whether this type of consulting is an appropriate fit before requesting an engagement.

Consulting Engagements May Be a Fit If You Are...

Advisory services are designed for individuals and organizations who are seeking analysis and insight, not support or treatment. It may be a fit if you are:

  • A founder, executive, senior leader, or advisor to leadership
  • Responsible for complex decisions with meaningful consequences
  • Noticing recurring patterns or dynamics that are difficult to interpret from inside the system
  • Looking for an external perspective rather than internal reassurance
  • Comfortable with candid analysis and clearly defined boundaries
  • Seeking decision-relevant insight you can act on independently

These engagements assume a level of authority, autonomy, and capacity to implement decisions once information is clarified.

A Note on Emotional Content

In organizational and leadership contexts, emotional or interpersonal material may naturally arise. When it does, it is treated as context, not content.

Consulting does not involve emotional exploration, processing, or intervention. Analysis remains focused on systems, roles, patterns, and decisions on an organizational level, rather than an individual's inner experience.

Consulting is Not a Fit If You Are...

To avoid confusion or harm, it’s equally important to be explicit about when these engagements are not appropriate. This work is not a fit if you are:

  • Seeking therapy, counseling, or coaching
  • Looking for emotional support, validation, or personal processingIn acute distress or crisis
  • Wanting help with personal growth, confidence, or well-being
  • Hoping for an ongoing, relational, or accountability-based dynamic
  • Expecting care, treatment, or mental health guidance

These engagements assume a level of authority, autonomy, and capacity to implement decisions once information is clarified.

Boundaries to Prevent Dual-Roles

To preserve clear professional boundaries, consulting and therapeutic services are not combined or transitioned between.

Those who engage in consulting or advisory work through Peterson Consulting & Advisory are not eligible for therapy services with Emily Ann Peterson, and any current or former therapy clients are not eligible for consulting engagements.

These boundaries are not arbitrary. They exist to ensure that:

  • The work remains ethical and clearly scoped
  • Expectations are aligned from the outset
  • The consulting relationship does not drift into therapeutic or supportive roles
  • Both parties are protected by role clarity

Clear boundaries make the work more effective, not less.

If You're Unsure...

If you’re unsure whether consulting engagements are appropriate, that’s often a signal to pause. In many cases:

  • Consulting and therapy serve different functions
  • Neither replaces the other
  • Attempting to use one for the purpose of the other leads to frustration

Taking time to choose the right type of support is a crucial step in making confident & profitable decisions.

If, after reviewing this page, this advisory work still seems aligned with what you’re seeking, you may request an engagement.

All inquiries begin with a qualification step to confirm fit. If appropriate, the next stage is a paid advisory scoping call to clarify scope and expectations before any work begins.
